Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 14-oz block firm tofu (400 g)
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • Sprayable oil, for waffle iron

Optional Stuffing

  • Dark chocolate chunks or chocolate chips (for stuffed waffles)

Instructions

  1. Prep Tofu: Drain the tofu and pat it dry thoroughly with a towel. Then cut the tofu block into thin slabs; either 4 slabs for plain waffles or 8 thinner slabs if you want to make stuffed waffles.
  2. Optional Stuffing: If opting for stuffed waffles, sandwich dark chocolate chunks or chips between two thin tofu slabs, creating a tofu ‘sandwich’.
  3. Coat with Cornstarch: Sprinkle cornstarch on a wide bowl or plate. Dip each side of the tofu slabs (or the outer sides if stuffed) into the cornstarch to coat evenly, tapping off any excess cornstarch.
  4. Preheat Waffle Iron: Heat your waffle iron to medium heat and spray it well with oil to prevent sticking.
  5. Cook Waffles: Place tofu slabs onto the preheated waffle iron and close firmly as possible. Allow the tofu to cook until it turns brown and crispy, approximately 10 to 12 minutes.
  6. Serve: Since tofu itself is mild in flavor, top your waffles with syrup, nut butter, whipped cream, or fresh fruit to add vibrant taste and texture.

Notes

  • Stuffing ideas: Avoid jam or nut butter fillings as they tend to squeeze out during cooking. Fresh fruit and chocolate are much better options for stuffed waffles.
  • Storage: Store tofu waffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Reheating: To regain crispiness after refrigeration or freezing, reheat waffles in a toaster oven or air fryer.
