Ingredients

For the tofu:

  • 1 (14oz) package extra firm tofu, drained and patted dry
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeds and membrane removed, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup red onion, finely diced
  • 3 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Oil for cooking

For the sauce:

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons red chili flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Optional: Rice, veggies, or noodles for serving

Instructions

  1. Toss the cubed tofu with one tablespoon cornstarch. Heat one tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu and cook until golden and crispy on all sides, about 6–8 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  2. Whisk together soy sauce, water, maple syrup or honey, chili flakes, vinegar, and cornstarch. Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat a bit of oil over medium heat. Add onion and jalapeño. Cook for 2–3 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the sauce to the skillet. Let it bubble and thicken for 1–2 minutes.
  6. Add cooked tofu and toss to coat. Simmer for 1–2 more minutes until everything is hot and saucy.
  7. Serve immediately, garnished with green onions.
