Ingredients

Dough and Toppings

  • 12 to 16 frozen dinner rolls (about 1.5 to 2″ diameter)
  • ¼ cup (57g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning

Dip Mixture

  • 8 ounces (227g) full-fat block cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 8 ounces (225g) shredded mozzarella cheese, divided (about 2 cups)
  • 12 to 16 pepperoni slices, divided (if mini size, about 32 pieces)
  • ¾ cup (180g) pizza sauce, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400ºF (204ºC) to prepare for baking the dip.
  2. Arrange Rolls: Line the outer rim of a large 8 to 10-inch cast iron skillet or baking dish with 12 to 16 frozen dinner roll balls, leaving the center empty. Allow the rolls to thaw for 15 minutes while preparing the dip mixture.
  3. Prepare Seasoned Butter: In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning until combined. Set aside.
  4. Make Cream Cheese Mixture: In a large bowl with a handheld mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the softened cream cheese on medium-high speed until smooth and creamy.
  5. Add Pepperoni and Cheese: Cut or tear 12 pepperoni slices into quarters (for standard size) and add to the cream cheese. If using mini pepperoni, add about three-quarters of the total amount. Add half of the shredded mozzarella cheese (about 1 cup) and mix again until fully combined. Set this mixture aside.
  6. Butter and Bake Rolls: Brush the thawed dinner rolls with the prepared seasoned butter mixture. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Assemble Dip: Remove the rolls from the oven. Pour ¼ cup of pizza sauce into the bottom center of the skillet. Spread the cream cheese and pepperoni mixture evenly over the sauce. Then layer with the remaining ½ cup pizza sauce, the remaining 1 cup mozzarella cheese, and top with the remaining pepperoni slices (halved if standard size, whole if mini-sized).
  8. Bake Final Dip: Return the skillet to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden and the rolls are fully cooked.
  9. Cool and Serve: Allow the dip to cool for about 15 minutes before serving to let it set and prevent burning. Serve warm as a delicious, shareable appetizer.
  10. Storage: To store leftovers, remove the rolls from the skillet and keep them separate from the dip. Refrigerate for up to 5 days. The dip can also be frozen for up to 3 months; thaw in the refrigerator and reheat before serving.

Notes

  • Frozen dinner rolls should be about 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter. Alternatively, use frozen pizza dough rolled into 1-inch balls.
  • Shredding your own fresh mozzarella cheese will yield a creamier texture than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Use standard or mini pepperoni slices; for mini pepperoni, roughly 32 pieces are appropriate, for standard, about 16 slices.
  • You can make this dip in any 8-10 inch baking dish or pan, and bread can be omitted if preferred by skipping dough-related instructions.
